Estimating surface runoff and groundwater recharge in an urban catchment using a water balance approach

چکیده

Abstract Land-use changes often have significant impact on the water cycle, including changing groundwater/surface-water interactions, modifying groundwater recharge zones, and increasing risk of contamination. Surface runoff in particular is significantly impacted by land cover. As surface can act as a carrier for contaminants found at surface, it important to characterize dynamics anthropogenic environments. In this study, relationship between urban areas explored using top-down balance approach. Two empirical models were used estimate runoff: (1) an updated, advanced method based curve number, followed (2) bivariate hydrograph separation. Modifications added each attempt better capture continuous soil-moisture processes explicitly account from impervious surfaces. Differences resulting estimates shed light complexity rainfall–runoff relationship, highlight importance understanding their control hydro(geo)logical responses. These results then input calculate recharge. approaches assess accuracy these estimates: comparison calculations calibrated conceptual HBV Light model, physically similar catchments Switzerland that are literature. all cases, estimated approximately 40–45% annual precipitation. conditions closely echo those Swiss characteristics.

Estimating Height runoff by using curve number method and Arc- CN Runoff tool in Afjeh Catchment

In Iran, there is a general risk of runoff and flood, and since this country has a dry to semi-arid climate, its predominant rainfall is not evenly distributed in terms of time and place. Routine runoff at the earth's surface can lead to risks such as groundwater abatement, social issues such as population migration, erosion and loss of soil fertility, sedimentation in reservoirs and water q...

Characterization of surface runoff from a subtropics urban catchment.

Characteristics of surface runoff from a 0.14-km2 urban catchment with separated sewer in Macau was investigated. Water quality measurements of surface runoff were carried out on five rainfall events during the period of August to November, 2005. Water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, TSS, COD, TN, Zn, Pb, and Cu were analyzed. The results show that TN and COD are the major pollutants ...

The process of precipitation – runoff of each basin, is influenced by hydrologic, geomorphology conditions, geological formation and vegetation. There are different methods in drainage basins. One way to estimate the runoff height is Curve Number (CN) method. That reperesents the hydrological behavior of basin. data were collected for statistics of climate and then topographic map of 1: 25000 a...

Application of Hydrological Balance Approach in the Study of Surface Water-Groundwater Exchange (Case Study: Zayandehrood River)

Introduction: Studying the changes in surface water storage and exchanges with groundwater in the hydrological system of rivers is a prerequisite for water resources management in the basin. In this paper, Zayandehrood River has been studied and the historical series of flow has been used in six hydrographic stations located downstream the Zayandehrood Dam. Materials and Methods: Based on the ...
